IDEA: 1 LIGHTBULB. 1 TREE.

July 18th, 2007

For my own entertainments sake I’ve been developing an idea for Osram, a german lightbulb company.
(shh. not entirely true, I have a friend that knows the marketing executive - but since the idea isn’t at all developed yet, I have no grandiose plans…)

Anyway, the idea revolves around this quote from Osram’s sales material:
1 DULUX lightbulb - 1 tree could be the rule of thumb. One energy saving lamp saves as much CO_2 over the year as one tree can absorb.”

The angle is very distinctly on OSRAM as a company that is environmentally responsible. A company that want the consumers to buy energy saving lightbulbs to reduce CO_2 emissions, for the sake of future generations.

Stylistically we are talking 100% 3D, in a minimalistic world. Most of the props will be flat-shaded and silhouette like. We are not trying to create realism, rather we are going for something slightly magical and eerie that fits with the soft values communicated.

The commercial kicks off focusing on tree branch and a firefly,

“speak: Our climate is changing. Experts have been warning of this for some time, and now we are seeing evidence in the weather patterns.”.

The firefly spreads it’s wings, and fly away from the branch. The camera tailing its flight, spirals away from the tree. During the transition the viewer is introduced to this world:

Boy and tree

“speak: We all must contribute to protect our environment as a living space for future generations”

The camera continues its motion outwards, and the viewers discover that the tree and the boy where actually inside a lightbulb!

Illustration of the general idea:

“speak: One energy saving lamp saves as much CO_2 over the year as one tree can absorb.”

Now we proceed to discover that the bulb we where inside earlier, is just a part of a universe of thousands and thousands lightbulbs, floating upwards in empty black space. (sortof similar the nightsky)

Mood.

The camera slowly floats through the bulb landscape. The Piano is accompanied by subtle violas.

“speak: If everyone in Europe were to switch to energy-saving lamps, an annual 57 million tonnes fewer of CO2 would be released into the atmosphere every year.

The camera move upwards, and the lightbulbs is seem to create a pattern:

A pattern of Bulbs

“speak: Doing nothing is jeopardizing our world

The camera continue to move upwards, and the before indiscernible pattern is revealed to be the OSRAM logo created by lightbulbs:

END SHOT

we can do this together. End.
